Duralogs Toxic to Birds!!!We love our little feathered childred with all our hearts. We do our best to protect them but sometimes things happen that we dont foresee. Below is an email sent to me by Jethro's broken hearted mommy. Have you ever heard of a bird dying due to the burning of a Duralog? My little lovebird Jethro died Monday night and it is the only thing I can think of environmentally that might have killed him. He was eating fine, had normal droppings and no nasal discharge or any sign of ill health. He was only 18 months. As it has been getting colder here I have burned three of these logs in the past week. Jethro's cage is in the adjoining room but the rooms are open to one another.
I checked with the Duralog website (too late it seems) and they state that birds should not be in the same room as the Duralog fire due to their extremely sensitive respiratory system.
I just wondered if you knew of any other cases and if maybe they should be posted as hazardous.
Thank you,
Catherine
Below is my email to Catherine. Catherine,
I am so sorry to here about your little bird.
I had not heard about the Duralog danger.
I will pass on your story to help other bird owners.
I will put your story in our next newsletter.
I do have a list of things that can be toxic to birds posted on my newsletter website.
We just never know what is going to affect them. I will update my list with the duralogs.
Thank you for sharing your story with me. I do very much appreciate it and please accept my deepest condolences.
Sincerely, Kimberly And Catherine's email back to me. Kimberly, Thank you so much. I am super aware of environmental hazards but never even thought about the log. I feel so terrible and miss Jethro so much. But I also know that these things happen and I wanted to make sure others knew about the possible danger. Duralog to their credit did post the warning on their website, but I did not even think about it.
Thanks for sharing this with your readers and your prompt reply. I sent along a video my son took of Jethro the week before he died. I hope you enjoy it.
