THE GREEN CHEEKED CONURE IS OUR BIRD OF THE MONTH!!Our “Poster Boy” is Five-Oh Heflin from Kennewick, Washington!!! Green Cheeked Conures are small, intelligent little birds that hail from South America. They tend not to be as noisy as other Conure species and are quite affectionate. The love to play with foot toys and use their feet as their hands in most anything they do. Five-Oh even knows how to use tools for grooming. He takes a piece of pasta in his foot and scratches his head and back with it, very efficiently. Their human language abilities are only moderate and chances are they will only have a limited vocabulary, although Five-Oh seems to be the exception. What they lack in human talk, they make up for in their cavorting antics. Their life span is about 30-35 years, with proper diet, housing, love and care. These little fellows have a huge personality and love to have attention and interactive play time. You will often see them hanging upside down and swinging from a swing or rope perch or hiding beneath a cloth or piece of paper, then scurrying out to attract attention. If you are looking for a wonderful companion, but; do not have the space for a huge cage and larger bird, give these little fellows some serious consideration. Many breeders are now producing color mutations of the Green Cheeked Conure and there are a couple of sub-species too. One of the most beautiful color mutations, in this author’s opinion, is the Pineapple Green Cheek and the most brilliantly colored sub-species is the Maroon Bellied Conure. No matter the color, their personalities are much the same and there will never be a dull moment or lack of companionship with one of these intelligent little fellows in your home. |

ARCADIA BIRD SANCTUARY - OUR SANCTUARY OF THE MONTH: When we heard, from the Parrot Toy Angels, about this very special, one-of-a-kind place in New Jersey, where birds who can no longer be pets for various reasons, may live out the rest of their lives in peace, just being birds, we had to check it out. Terri Jones operates this forever home for abused, neglected or non-pet quality birds and is a fully licensed non-profit, 501©3 organization. Terri and Arcadia have the only Scientific Holding permit from the New Jersey Department of Fish and Wildlife which permits them to work with Wild Quaker (Monk) Parakeets (Parrots) and release them to QPS-RAPP for removal to legal states. Quakers are illegal to own in New Jersey and the wild nests there are often torn down with the babies being euthanized. Arcadia can now legally receive these wild, displaced birds and authorize their safe deliverance to a legal state by the Quaker Parakeet Society (QPS) Rescue And Placement Program (RAPP) volunteers. BIRD CAGES GALORE GIVES A HUGE THANK YOU TO TERRI AND ARCADIA FOR SAVING THESE WONDERFUL BIRDS FROM CERTAIN DEATH. Arcadia Bird Sanctuary and Educational Center is a shelter where all birds are housed on the premises. Birds are not fostered out, but; a permanent home for birds that are no longer suitable as pets. Some well socialized birds will be adopted to the perfect family; but, that determination is never made until the bird is well known to the staff. All residents are vet checked every six months and are micro-chipped. Some birds will be at Arcadia for many months or even years, so it is important that they get to know each bird as an individual before trying to find the right home for it. Their philosophy is: You Can’t Match a Stranger with a Stranger!!! Arcadia Bird Sanctuary and Educational Center is affiliated with the American Federation of Aviculture, as a member and is also a member of the Avicultural Society of America. Both of these national organizations of avicultural professionals are great sources of information, networking and knowledge. Terri a hearty thank you for getting involved with the wild Quakers of New Jersey and stepping up to the plate to insure their lives and safety until QPS-RAPP personnel can arrive to take them to a safe state and forever homes there. You are a Quaker Parrot Angel. |
