THE SOLOMON ISLANDS ECLECTUS IS OUR BIRD OF THE MONTH:

The Solomon Islands Eclectus is the only one of the larger parrots that is dimorphic. Males and females are easily distinguished by their colored plumage with the males being green and the females being variations of red and blue.  Some interesting and natural variations do occur.  The Eclectus can have a life span of65-85 years, so folks who are owned by them, need to wisely choose their future forever home with a person who will commit to and is young enough to love these birds until they cross the Rainbow Bridge.  They are very sentient and interactive birds who have clear and interactive speech patterns.  There are no major diseases that are common to them, with the exception of an inexplicable syndrome called “Toe Tapping and Wing Flipping” that is attributable to low calcium levels.  Not only are they beautiful but; they are loveable companions who need to be constantly enriched by plenty of toys to play with so boredom does not set in.  The best source of information about dietary requirements, care and vetting comes from www.landofvos.com ; a website totally devoted to the Eclectus Parrot and its well being.  You will enjoy their section from the Kitchen Physician which offers many recipes for a varied diet for your bird.  If you have or are planning to be owned by an Eclectus, contact www.info@birdcagesgalore.com to discuss and purchase the perfect house at the most reasonable rates for your Eclectus.

anti-bird legislation:

Just about the time that the staff at Bird Cages Galore thinks that all is quiet on the Legislative Front, another piece of anti-pet bird Legislation pops up!!  The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has the following proposal to eliminate or BAN ownership of Quaker Parrots.  You can read the newspaper article here and bear in mind that Quakers are NOT from South Carolina; but, from South America. http://www.madison.com/wsj/topstories/280782  This article is poorly written and saturated with non-factual statements.  The newspaper has a forum to comment on this; and, as companion bird owners, we need to comment – not because we are all in Wisconsin, but; to stop the spreading of disinformation and eventual banning of pet ownership.  I ask that we all be polite in our response, will firm and committed.  More flies are gotten with honey than vinegar.  The actual legislative proposal can be read at http://dnr.wi.gov/invasives/. The list of prohibited plants and animals is at http://dnr.wi.gov/invasives/classification/classification_table.htm#vertebrates (there is a comment forum for each there, as well. (As an aside, I notice that the Earthworm is about to be banished from Wisconsin, too).  DNR isn’t doing their ecological impact work here, people.  The American Federation of Aviculture is the ONLY organization with an influential Legislative Presence.  Please take a minute and read their page about Animal Rights Activist Groups and how the AFA is fighting to stop there “NO PETS” movement.  You can keep abreast of pending legislation by checking in with the AFA website - www.afabirds.org  and rest assured that the staff at Bird Cages Galore will use this and many other resources to insure our right to have bird companions and to help stamp out those pending laws that would take that right away.  For now, we can only hope that this column returns to “Nothing New To Report” status next month.
