The Yellow Collared Mini Macaw can be a wonderful addition to any bird home. These little guys come from Central South America in and around Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Bolivia. They are one of the few Macaws that have adapted to human presence in their lands. These pretty little birds can still be seen flying in huge flocks in the wild. They will live almost anywhere whether in the mountains, woodlands or valleys, they are thriving in the wild. |
Beak Health:Healthy happy active birds rarely suffer from over grown beaks. The best way to keep your bird's beak and nails in tip top shape is to provide them with lots of toys and different perches. The best toys for keeping your birds beak up to snuff is any toy that he will play and entertain himself with. Wood chew toys are the best but if he won't chew them it's not going to help. That's why any safe toy that captures your bird's interest is good. As for his nails, climbing toys also help this and of course natural perches like Manzanita in different sizes. Some birds will let you file their nails with a finger nail file to remove the sharp points. Never cut your birds nails with clippers unless you have experience doing so. Your bird can bleed to death if you cut the quick and are unable to stop the bleeding. It is best to have a professional clip your birds nails. If you provide toys and different perches and your birds beak and nails still tend to over grow it is best to take your bird to the vet for evaluation and trimming. |
POOPOLOGY:Check your bird's poop daily for the proper consistency. Droppings should be well formed with both green and white streaks in it. (Lorys and Lorikeets are the exception. They have looser poops due to their high sugar/nectar diet). If you begin to see loose or discolored stools, please call your vet. Because birds hide illness so well, their poop is the best indicator we have of trouble/illness brewing. Before panicking, go over what your bird has had to eat in recent days. The color of food will tint their poop. |
Natural Sunlight How important is it?Bird experts have long believed in the benefits of natural sunlight for our feathered friends. In their natural habitat birds are exposed to natural sun light all day. They need the sun to set their internal clock and regulate metabolism. Without it they can suffer health and behavioral problems. |
